Optics Design Intern
PulseMedica, an Edmonton based startup, is searching for an Optics Design Intern to join our world-class team. This person will support the end-to-end design, assembly, and characterization for our ophthalmic imaging device. This person will also support the designing of experiments and formulation of test plans for optical components/systems.
The ideal candidate will have a broad technical background in relevant technical fields such as optics, physics, mathematics, mechanical systems and/or electrical systems. A solid understanding of optical design tools such as Zemax/CODEV/LightTools and/or mechanical design tools such as SolidWorks/OnShape would be beneficial. This person has a natural curiosity for solving technical problems, building effective solutions, is a team player, is patient and has effective communication skills.

The Opportunity
The Optics Design Intern role provides a unique opportunity to work with a group of talented and energetic people and to contribute towards setting the direction for the company’s future. The successful candidate will actively work within our team of scientists and engineers for projects involving development of new technologies, concept engineering and new product development in the ophthalmic medical device industry.
The position’s responsibilities and tasks include supporting optical systems Research and Development (R&D) activities by:
- Supporting the setup, alignment, and maintenance of prototype and benchtop devices.
- Characterization of system performance using optical test equipment and processes.
- Troubleshooting issues and measured deviations in system performance.
- Design of prototype subsystems and components.
- Design of experimental procedures and components.
- Documentation of experimental results, system verification, and design decisions.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a bachelors or degree level qualification in optical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics or equivalent at an accredited Canadian, post secondary institute..
Requirements:
- Ability to design and execute experiments and effectively synthesize and communicate results as they relate to technical and program goals all the while highlighting risks and mitigation strategies
- Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team on laboratory maintenance, prototype assembly & test, and documentation work
- Positive, can do attitude, strong engagement skills with past history of meeting or exceeding goals and obtaining successful results
- Demonstrates energy, enthusiasm, and creativity in problem solving
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
- Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
Preferred Candidate:
- Technical knowledge and experience with optical engineering, including optical modeling, design, fabrication, testing, and/or building of optical systems
- Hands-on experience working with optical systems in a lab environment to validate system characteristics and performance
- Experience with optical design tools such as Zemax/CODEV/LightTools and/or mechanical design tools such as SolidWorks/OnShape
Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2026
Duration: 8 months, Temporary Full Time (40 hours per week)
Salary: $22 - $28/hour
Location: Edmonton
